Genre Research: Joker (2019)

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

To do more research on the Thriller Genre, we watched the movie Joker. Joker is a Crime Thriller that follows a comedian who is trying to make it big in a dangerous Gotham city. Overall, the film was good with a remarkably interesting storyline that made you want to keep watching. The film uses many elements linked with the thriller genre, like for example, close-up shots. close-up shots are used to display the character’s emotions and give dramatic effect. A lot of the film takes place in dimly lit settings which correlates to the emotion of the film. A lot of tracking and panning is also used which drags out the revealing of certain objects that keep the audience on edge.

Whilst watching the film we saw that the Joker’s backstory includes dark moments as it shows Arthur’s abusive childhood and upbringing. This is what flawed his mental health and caused him to go insane. We found this interesting, and the dark back story is an element that we chose to include in our final task to explain why the main character has an imaginary friend. We also found how Arthur gradually becomes increasingly more insane throughout the film to the point where he commits a violent crime on live television. We really appreciated how every failure that Arthur experiences stacks on top of each other until Arthur reaches a breaking point where he commits a crime.

What we did not appreciate, on the other hand, was the amount of gore in the film. The gore found in Joker sends the viewers a different type of message compared to the one we are trying to send. Our movie is not something that we want to be filled with gore and extremely grim scenes. Also, we do not want to disturb the viewers with these types of scenes as other thriller movies do. This is why this type of scene is something we are going to move away from since it is not needed for us.
