Title Research: Mindhunter (2017)

 For our last blogs, we researched the title sequence of the movie Mindhunter. We found the titles of the movie on the website “artofthetitle.com”

What titles are displayed during the opening sequence?

During the opening sequence, the titles displayed were the Production Company (Netflix), the prominent actors, the casting crew, the music director, the editor, the production designer, the director of cinematography, the co-producers, the producers, executive producers, the title, the story creator, the teleplay, and then the director. 

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The images that are prioritized in the opening sequence are those of a crime scene or the investigation of a mysterious crime scene. For example, you can see tape recorders and a dead body in the opening sequence. These are all things that might be used to examine in an unsolved murder. All of the images prioritized in the opening sequence might be evidence of a murder. These images all have the purpose of foreshadowing the plot of the movie which happens to center around two FBI agents that interview serial killers to solve open cases.

 What connotations do these images carry?

These images carry unsettling and eerie connotations. Images such as a dead body and many tape recorders are blended with dark lighting and a dark color palette bring fear upon the viewer. The abrupt and quick appearances of the corpse jump-scare the viewer and the dark palette makes the viewer feel as if they are not supposed to see this.

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The film establishes an eerie feeling of the genre by using key elements that induce these emotions. These key elements include the dark color palette, distortion, and eerie imagery. The opening sequence uses a dark color palette which creates the ominous environment that is very familiar with Thriller movies. The distorted editing around the corpse which adds to the ominous tone of the film. The eerie imagery creates a mysterious tone which is associated with Thriller movies. These 3 elements combined establish a feeling of the thriller genre. 

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The movie uses many strategies to appeal to its target audience in the opening sequence. The movie uses cuts to the corpse in order to create a mysterious effect. This will make viewers interested in finding out what it means and what had happened to it. The opening sequence also uses distorted editing in order to create fear around the body. The quick cuts only offer a glimpse which adds to it animosity. 

How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

Technology has been used effectively in creating a mysterious and scary environment within the opening sequence. All shots are close-up shots which depict either the recording equipment that is used in the film for evidence or the corpse. Whilst showing the corpse, editing is used to create distortion and viewers only get a glimpse of the corpse which creates a mysterious tone and is effective in making the viewers hooked and make them want to watch further.

Group Blog

 For an assigned group project, I was given the task to figure out who to choose as a group member for my group. I had many options on how many people I wanted in a group and I chose to have 1 other person in my group, as it reduces confliction and we can always recruit more actors.
