Genre Decision: Thriller
We started our decision of what genre our final task would be set in by looking at a list of the various genres there are in film. After thoroughly investigating each genre, we rejected the ones that either our movie couldn't be or weren't what we wanted it to be. We settled on the genres of drama, thriller, and mystery. After deciding on those potential genres, we discussed and considered how our movie's story may fit into each one. We made an effort to envision how our project would turn out given the genre we chose and how much we would enjoy the plot's premise within that genre. If our final task was set in the drama genre, we would have to incorporate love or to focus on how the main character’s friend could lead the main character to success. There were a lot of scratched heads, and we weren’t interested in the drama genre. We decided to drop it and focus on the mystery and thriller genres. We decided to eliminate each genre by evaluating the plot in the style of each genre and eliminated what made the least sense. Whilst evaluating the plot in the style of a thriller and mystery film, we knew that it would be interesting in either genre. For the mystery genre we had considered the ways that the movie could end. We liked the ways it could end but the mystery genre was very slow, and we wouldn’t be able to finish it in the given time span. That was a major deal breaker. For the thriller genre, we liked that it evoked suspense and excitement, but we couldn’t exactly find a way to realistically reveal that the main character's friend didn’t exist. So, since we couldn’t find the perfect genre, we decided to try and incorporate elements from both the mystery and thriller genres. So, after deciding we would incorporate elements from both the thriller and mystery genres, we drew out what the storyline might look like. We then proposed that it would have the intensity of a thriller but would also have the plot revolving around a missing friend that didn’t exist. It was perfect. So, all we had to do was research whether our movie was a mystery or a thriller. After researching, we found that there are a lot of thrillers that incorporate elements from the mystery genre. So, by definition, our final task will fall under the thriller genre.
